Technology: The Ultimate Tool
If you had told me 20 years ago we would access more information in a single day than our ancestors did in a lifetime, and that businesses depend on the efficient use of this information, I would have laughed. How could we have known technology would play such a pivotal role in our lives'?
The question I have asked myself many times is this: are we fundamentally better off because of technology? It is difficult to say no, especially when the speed of our communications, i..e, email, mobile phones, etc., help us better streamline the day-to-day. Where I have trouble connecting the dots is more existential, and by that I mean the kind of review we all do around this business of living.
It happens sometimes driving along on a beautiful afternoon or after a particularly meaningful conversation with a client - almost as a sidebar a window pops up in my mind around the fact that no device or version of this or that is as impressive as the potential for technology to one day help eradicate poverty, homelessness, disease, hunger, etc. Until those problems are solved, until each and every one of us is better off, I'm not sure just how far we've come.
